Raise your hand if you've already started thinking about next year's classroom setup. ✋ Put it down. You're off duty.
No unit plans. No supply hauls. No "productive summer" pressure. You've spent nine months pouring into everyone else. This season, the only lesson plan is rest.
But if you're anything like most teachers we know, slowing down doesn't come naturally. So here are 10 gentle, intentional ways to make the most of your well-earned break.
1. Sleep without an alarm at least once a week. Your body has been running on a school-year schedule for nine months. Let it reset.
2. Do something creative with no goal attached. Paint, garden, bead, bake, whatever lights you up. Not to be good at it. Just because it feels good.
3. Read something purely for pleasure. Not a professional development book. Not a curriculum guide. A novel. A memoir. A guilty pleasure thriller. You've earned it.
4. Spend time in nature. A walk, a lake day, a porch with coffee. Nature has a way of quieting the noise that a school year amplifies.
5. Reconnect with people who fill your cup. The school year can be isolating. Summer is the season to call the friend you've been meaning to call, plan the dinner you've been putting off.
6. Move your body in a way that feels joyful, not obligatory. Dance in your kitchen. Swim. Take a slow bike ride. Movement doesn't have to be a workout.
7. Treat yourself to something handcrafted and meaningful. You spend all year giving. Summer is a beautiful time to receive, even if it's a gift to yourself. A pair of polymer clay earrings you've been eyeing. A planner sticker set that makes you excited for fall. A beaded lanyard that's as bold and beautiful as the year you just had. Something made with care, just for you.
8. Journal without a prompt. Just write. What you're feeling, what you're releasing, what you're looking forward to. Let the school year leave your body through the pen.
9. Say NO and mean it. Summer is not a second shift. It's okay to protect your time and energy fiercely.
10. Remember who you are outside the classroom. You are a whole person with passions, quirks, dreams, and a life that exists beyond your students. Summer is the season to remember that and to celebrate it.
You gave so much this year. We hope this summer gives it all back to you.
