Why I Started Making Teacher Gifts and What I've Learned

Teachers show up every single day, not just to teach, but to inspire, encourage, and pour knowledge and confidence into the lives of their students. I know this firsthand, because Art & Soul TX Design was born from that world.

As a former Art teacher, I spent years in the classroom watching students grow.  I created alongside them and experienced the quiet magic that happens when a child discovers they're capable of something beautiful.  I also experienced the other side, the long hours, the personal spending on supplies, the end-of-year exhaustion, and the small moments of appreciation that meant everything.

That's where it started.

The Spark

When I stepped out of the classroom and into the maker space, my mission didn't change; it just took a new shape. Instead of teaching art, I began making it again. And almost immediately, the question became: who deserves art that is truly beautiful, handcrafted, and made with intention?

Teachers, of course.

The first handmade teacher gifts I made weren't just products.  They were personal. Beaded lanyards for colleagues. Polymer clay earrings gifted to my best friends at end-of-year celebrations. Planner stickers passed out at PLC meetings that said here's something to make your week easier. The response was immediate and overwhelming: "Where can I get more?"

That question became my business.

What I Make and Why It Matters

Every piece I create at Art & Soul TX Design is small-batch, Texas-made, and designed with educators in mind.  My beaded teacher lanyards aren't just functional, they're a daily reminder that someone saw you, valued you, and took the time to create something just for you. My polymer clay earrings are lightweight, expressive, and classroom-ready. My planner stickers are made for the organized, overworked, deeply dedicated humans who color-code their lives so their students can thrive.

I don't mass-produce. I don't cut corners. I make things the way a former Art teacher would, with care, with craft, and with a deep respect for the person receiving them.

What I've Learned

Running a small business that creates gifts for educators has taught me more than I expected. Here's what stands out most:

Teachers are the most grateful customers you'll ever have, and the most underserved. The market is full of generic "World's Best Teacher" mugs. What's missing are gifts that feel premium, personal, and worthy of the people who shape the next generation.

Handmade matters more than ever. In a world of fast fashion and mass production, something made by hand carries weight. Teachers feel it. They notice the difference between something grabbed off a shelf and something crafted with intention.
